Biographical Information[edit]

Joe Cannon, a first rounder in January 1974, was in the majors from 1977 to 1980. His cousin, Willie Broughton, was an infielder in the San Francisco Giants chain in 1960.

Cannon moved his way up the Houston Astros organization from 1974-1977, hitting .306 with 39 stolen bases for Charleston in 1977. He made his major league debut on September 22, 1977, and appeared in 9 games for the Astros. He was four years younger than pitcher J.R. Richard. In 1978 he was mostly in the minors with Charleston again, this time hitting .293 with 18 triples. He played 8 more games in the majors, hitting .222 (4-for-18). After the season, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in the deal that brought Alan Ashby to Houston. Joe saw most of his big league at bats in 1979, batting .211 with just three extra base hits, on a team which had 39-year-old Rico Carty at DH and 20-year-old Danny Ainge at second base. He also appeared in 59 games at Syracuse. Joe spent all of 1980 in the bigs, playing 70 games for the Blue Jays with only 50 at-bats. In 1981 and part of 1982 he was at Syracuse, and he spent part of 1982 with Knoxville. He finished his career in 1983 in A ball with the Kinston Blue Jays.

After years of coaching, he became a manager in 1991, and managed from 1991-1997 and 1999-2002. In 1991, a stadium in Hanover, MD was named after Joe.
