Biographical Information[edit]

Iván Prieto has caught in the Cuban Serie Nacional and for the Cuban national team.

He debuted in 2015-2016, going 0 for 1; Franklin Aballé was the main catcher for Holguín. He was two for four in 2016-2017, then hit .250/.277/.341 in 2017-2018. He batted .257/.336/.394 in 2018-2019 then fell to .209/.254/.284 in 2019-2020.

Prieto took major strides in 2020-2021, moving to Granma and producing at a .337/.459/.440 clip while throwing out 40.1% of those who tried to steal. [1] He slipped to .234/.296/.328 in the postseason, but he had impressed enough to make Cuba's squad for the Americas Olympic Qualifier. Backing up Yosvani Alarcón, he sat out the opener then was a late entry in their 6-5 loss to Canada after Alarcón had been yanked for a pinch-hitter. With Cuba already eliminated, he got to start game 3 against Colombia. He drew a 1st-inning walk from Yeizer Marrugo then grounded out in the 3rd against Sergio Palacio. In the 4th, he singled to score Raico Santos then came around to score. In the 6th, he singled off Jean Ruiz and scored again. Freddy González plunked him in the 7th and he scored a third run in Cuba's rout of Colombia. [2]

He was the bullpen catcher for Cuba in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, then following the team's loss to Team USA in the semi-finals, he defected to the U.S. Given his long experience in the Cuban League, he was eligible to be declared a free agent immediately, although it wasn't clear if he would elicit much interest, being already 26.
