Biographical Information

Igor Makhambetov was on the USSR national team in the 1990 Goodwill Games. In the 1991 Intercontinental Cup, he hit .120/.214/.120. His four runs were second on the team, one behind Leonid Korneev and his two steals were also second, one behind Ilya Bogatyrev. He had 24 putouts with no errors as the Soviet Union's starting center fielder. He hit .231/.364/.231 with five runs and six steals (in nine tries) in eight games in the 1993 European Championship, fielding .938 in center. He led the team in steals and tied for second in runs (two behind Sergei Gigalov). For the event, he tied Jamel Boutagra, Marcel Joost and Mervin Beauperthuy for third in steals (though all were caught fewer times) and trailing Eddy Dix and Jeffrey Cranston. In the 1995 European Championship, he batted .241/.313/.345 for the Russian national team, fielding .935 as their main 1B. He led the team with five RBI, one more than Nikolay Marishev.

There is limited English-language information available about the Russian League. It is known that Makhambetov played for the Moscow Red Devils (1992-1995), SKV (1997-1999) and RusStar (2000). He hit .455/.561/.636 in 1997 and .393/.460/.481 with 22 runs and 29 RBI in 23 games in 1998. He was third in the league in RBI, two behind Dmitry Golubev. In 1999, he batted .386/.500/.457 with 21 runs and 20 RBI in 17 games. In 2000, he was 6th with 30 RBI.
