Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Ian Lewis was signed by the Miami Marlins as an international amateur free agent out of the Bahamas on July 2, 2019. The speedster began his pro career two years later, in 2021 with the FCL Marlins, hitting .302/.354/.497 in 43 games as the team's main second baseman, making the league's post-season All-Star team and being named an organizational All-Star. In the interim, he had been forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, he was promoted to the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League, hitting .265/.347/.368 in 51 games, missing the second half of the season after a mid-July injury. As a result, he repeated the level in 2023, sharing his playing time between second base and third base. On August 16th, he made the news for an unusual feat: he stole five bases without getting a single hit in a game against the St. Lucie Mets. He reached first base on an error in both the 3rd and 5th innings, stealing one base the first time, and all three the second. He then drew a walk in the 7th and completed a double steal with another speed demon, Jordan McCants, the only player on the team with more base thefts. That particular feat had only been documented once in the major leagues, by Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson in 1989 but was slightly more common in the minors, with eight documented occurrences since 2005.
