Hyung-cheol Gye pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization.
Gye played for the South Korean national team in the 1976 Amateur World Series. When the KBO was founded in 1982, the OB Bears signed him and he went 4-4 with a 4.88 ERA. He was 9-12 with a 3.44 ERA in 1983, and he was 5th in strikeouts (tied with Ho-kyun Lim), 4th in walks (between Sang-yoon Lee and Ho-yeon Jang) and 6th in losses (tied with Si-jin Kim). Gye had his career-year in 1984, and he went 14-4 with a 2.06 ERA. He ranked 2nd in ERA (.48 behind Jang), 9th in strikeouts (between Yeong-il Oh and Il-eon Choi) and 6th in wins (between Ki-ryong Ha and Myeong-bu Chang). Gye had a 11-11 record with a 2.78 ERA in 1985, ranking 8th in ERA (between Dong-soo Park and Hisao Niura), 8th in strikeouts (tied with Park) and 7th in wins (tied with Young-nam Kim and Chang).
The Incheon native went 5-7 with a 3.16 ERA in 1986, and he was 8-12 with a 2.61 ERA in 1987. He was 9th in ERA (between Jin-wook Kim and Gun-woo Kim) and 3rd in walks (tied with Jang). He was 10-12 with a 3.75 ERA in 1988, and he was 5-8 with a 3.59 ERA in 1989. The veteran's ERA rose to 5.42 with a 2-13 record in 1990, and he was 1-6 with a 5.86 ERA in 1991 then he retired. He still recorded 2 complete games in his last season, and he was the oldest pitcher to complete a game until Jin-woo Song broke his record in 2005. He was the pitching coach of the Ssangbangwool Raiders from 1997 to 1998, the Hanwha Eagles in 1999 and Samsung Lions in 2000. He returned to the Eagles as their pitching coach from 2001 to 2004, and he coached Choongang High School from 2005 to 2006. Gye then coached the minor league team of the SK Wyverns from 2007 to 2011, the LG Twins from 2013 to 2014 and the Eagles from 2015 to 2016.
Overall, Gye was 69-89 with a 3.43 ERA, struck out 548 and pitched 1,286 2/3 innings in 10 seasons in the KBO.
