Biographical Information

Hyland "Hy" Gunning played four games in the major leagues. He was at Princeton University during 1908-11, and made his major league debut on August 8, 1911. He was a year younger than teammate Tris Speaker on the 1911 Red Sox.

His minor league career was also a short one, and by 1916 he was serving in the Army. He was injured in WWI. Thereafter he became employed at a candy manufacturer and worked his way up to president before he retired. Then he moved to Maine and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Hy's time at Princeton overlapped with that of King Lear, Dutch Sterrett and several other major leaguers. For part of Gunning's time at Princeton, the school's president was Woodrow Wilson, soon to become President of the United States.

Through 2019, the only other major leaguer named Gunning has been Tom Gunning, who played in the 1890's.
