Biographical Information

Charles "Dutch" Sterrett came out of Princeton University to play major league baseball in 1912 and 1913. His team was the New York Highlanders in 1912, when he made his debut on June 20th. The next season, they were renamed the Yankees, and thus Sterrett is remembered as one of the first Yankees. He played first base on Opening Day of 1913, and so is sometimes remembered as the first first baseman of the Yankees. The Yankees were defeated by Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators that day.

Sterrett was mostly a center fielder and first baseman, but sometimes he was asked to serve as catcher. In 1913, he was one of the players asked to catch during what one article called "the Yankees' Catching Mess of 1913". [1]

He spent some of 1913 in the minors with the Venice Tigers and had the second highest batting average on the team, playing mostly catcher.
