Huron Cubs

From BR Bullpen

In 1969 the team in Huron, SD changed from the Huron Phillies to the Huron Cubs. Under manager Mel Wright, Huron went 31-39, fourth in the six-team Northern League. They drew 23,879 fans, second in the league, and outscored their opponents 333-326. Dick Arbogast (8-5, 2.68) was fourth in the circuit in ERA. 3B Jim Brunette (.351/~.439/.559) was second in the league in average, probably led in slugging and tied for the RBI lead (47), but struggled in the field (.890). OF Chris Ward batted .332/~.410/.435 and was third in average. OF Pat Bourque (.281/~.400/.452) went on to the best career.

George Freese was the new manager in 1970 and the Cubs were 37-31, second in the league. Attendance led the loop (23,997). Ignacio Bracamontes (7-3, 2.41) led the league in shutouts and was second in ERA, while the offense was again led by the third baseman, this time being Bob D. Watson (.342/~.435/.553, third in average, possibly second in slugging, the league leader with 19 doubles). Rick Reuschel (9-2, 3.53) was second in the league in wins; while his ERA was barely above the team mark of 3.58 (the best in the league), he clearly had the greatest career of any player in Huron Cubs history.

Despite their solid attendance, Huron vanished from the Northern when it shrank from six teams to four following the 1970 season. The city would be without professional baseball until 1994 when the Huron Heaters came to town.
