Biographical Information

Infielder Hudson Potts was drafted by the San Diego Padres with the first pick of Compensation Round A in the 2016 amateur draft. It was the 24th overall pick and in any other year would have been part of the first round proper, but in 2016 that round was significantly amputated because teams lost their pick due to signing prime free agents. The pick was San Diego's second that year - they had picked P Cal Quantrill with the #8 pick - and came just one ahead of P Eric Lauer; the pick was obtained as compensation for Justin Upton having signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers.

Potts began his pro career in 2016 with 43 games with the AZL Padres and 16 with the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League. At just 17, he was one of the youngest players in the U.S.-based minor leagues that year, but still hit a solid .280/.338/.366 with 42 runs scored. In 2017, he graduated to full-season ball and spent the entire year with the Fort Wayne Wizards, in the Midwest League, once again facing significantly older competition. Playing third base, he more than held his own in 125 games, hitting .253/.293/.428; the OBP was a bit low, the result of striking out 140 times while drawing just 23 walks, but he displayed solid power, with 23 doubles and 20 homers, in addition to 69 RBIs. In 2018, he began the year with the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League before earning a late-season promotion to the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League, reaching AA before turning 20. He hit well for Lake Elsinore: .281 with 17 homers and 58 RBIs in 106 games, although he struggled in his 22 games in AA, when he hit just .154.

In 2019, Hudson played 107 games in AA with the Amarillo Sod Poodles, also spending 4 games in the Arizona League on a rehabilitation assignment. In The Texas League, he hit .227/.290/.406, once again displaying good power (23 doubles and 16 homers) but poor on-base skills (32 walks and 128 strikeouts). defensively, he played mainly third base and a bit of second base. In 2020, he was assigned to the Padres' alternate training site until on August 30th he was traded to the Boston Red Sox alongside Jeisson Rosario in return for 1B Mitch Moreland.
