Following a brief minor league career, Howie Gershberg became a longtime pitching coach. He first coached at St. John's University where he tutored John Franco and Frank Viola. He then became a minor league pitching coach with the Angels from 1985 to his death in 2003. He helped with the early development of Troy Percival, Jarrod Washburn, John Lackey, Francisco Rodriguez and Chuck Finley among many others. He coached the Salem Angels in 1987, Bend Bucks in 1988-1989, Boise Hawks in 1990-1992, Palm Springs Angels in 1993, Lake Elsinore Storm in 1994-1996 [1], Vancouver Canadians in 1997, Boise again in 1998, and Erie SeaWolves in 1999-2000.
