Holguín joined the Cuban Serie Nacional in 1977-1978. They won their only title in 2001-2002 despite not having any league leaders that season. They have not had any players who were prominent stars on the Cuban national team. Aroldis Chapman, who had some success with the club, went on to more fame in the US.

Team nicknames include Cachorros (Cubs) and Sabuesos (Hounds).
