Biographical Information[edit]

Hersh Martin played 6 seasons in the major leagues, from 1937-1940 as a centerfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies and from 1944-1945 as a left fielder with the New York Yankees. He was an All Star in 1938. He stole a few bases, had moderate power, and drew a fair amount of walks. In 1938 when he hit .298, the team hit .254. With the Yankees in 1944 at the age of 34, he hit .302 on a team that hit .264. He had the second-highest batting average among the regulars, behind Snuffy Stirnweiss.

In addition to his major league service, Herschel Martin collected 2,298 hits in the minor leagues, leading the Three-I League in R (1935 - 112), the Texas League in 3B (1936 - 21), and the West Texas-New Mexico League in 2B and Avg (1948 - 61 & .425). He was on the 1946 and 1947 Oakland Oaks, hitting .361 in 294 at-bats in 1947 at the age of 37.

In 1955 and 1956, Martin scouted for the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1958 he scouted for the Cubs. From 1961 to 1979, Martin was a scout for the New York Mets.
