Biographical Information

Harry McCaffery was an infielder/outfielder who played for both the Louisville Colonels (one game only) and the St. Louis Brown Stockings of the American Association in 1882, and again for the St. Louis the following year.

His record previously included one pitching appearance for the 1885 Cincinnati Red Stockings, also of the AA. This was likely the work of another player, a local player from Baltimore, MD hired to start one road game against the local Orioles - this man won the game in spite of allowing 9 runs (6 of them earned) in pitching a complete game. This person was long known only by the last name McCaffery, although he has now been identified as Bill McCaffrey, about whom nothing else is known.

Harry McCaffery had the highest slugging percentage on the 1882 Brown Stockings.

Harry also played in the minors. He is known to have been at Davenport and at Lawrence. Bid McPhee was also at Davenport in the year McCaffery was there. After his playing career, he was an umpire in the Union Association in 1884 and for a few games in the National League in 1885 and 1886.
