Biographical Information[edit]

Missouri native Ham Schulte spent fourteen active seasons in professional baseball from 1934 to 1951. He appeared in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 120 games in the 1940 season and led the National League second basemen in fielding. Ham made just twelve errors in 611 chances for a league leading .980 percentage. Ham was not quite so good with the bat, hitting just .236 with 103 base hits in 436 at-bats. This was Ham's only time in the Show.

The infielder was sold to the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League on January 4, 1941 and never got that second chance with the big league clubs. Schulte spent 1936 with the Birmingham Barons of the Southern Association and it was his only season to top the .300 barrier. Ham appeared in 125 games and picked up 142 base-hits in 469 at-bats for a .303 average. He appeared in 1,493 career minor league outings with 5,318 at-bats with 1,494 base hits for a minor league career .281 batting average.

Schulte became a manager in the later years of his career, handling the Lincoln Athletics of the class A Western League for part of the 1947 season. He then took over the reins of the Ogden Reds of the class C Pioneer League in 1949 and in 1950 he was 1 of 2 that headed up the Springfield Giants in the class D Mississippi-Ohio Valley League. Schulte closed out his professional baseball career in 1951 as 1 of 2 managers for the Big Stone Gap Rebels of the class D Mountain States League.

Schulte served three years (1943-1945) in the United States Army during World War II. He was a co-owner of the St Charles Bowling Lanes for 34 years, retiring in 1977. He died from cancer at his home in St. Charles, MO, on December 21, 1993. Ham was buried under his birth name of Schultehenrich.
