Gye-sung Lee has been a player and umpire in the KBO.
Lee was a 9th round pick of the Samsung Lions in the 1996 draft but hurt his eye in spring training when a ball hit it. He was 0 for 4 in the 1996 KBO and 0 for 2 with a walk in 1997. He was 7-for-20 with a walk, 3 doubles and a homer in 1998. He was sent to the Ssangbangwool Raiders with Yong-mo Yang for Gi-tae Kim, Hyun-wook Kim and 2 billion won. He hit .214/.267/.250 in 31 plate appearances for them in 1999. Traded back to Samsung for Kwang-Hyun Kim, he was a frequently-used bench player in 2000 and hit .235/.273/.331 in 146 PA over 67 games.
In 2001, he was traded with Joo-chan Kim to the Lotte Giants for Hae-young Ma and saw his most playing time - 335 PA and 109 G. He batted .243/.312/.360, splitting right field with Félix José. He slipped to .218/.274/.298 and lost playing time in 2002 then rebounded to .259/.325/.400 in 2003. Mostly used as a pinch-hitter in 2004, he eked out a .179/.343/.179 line then was 1-for-11 with a walk in 2005. In 408 games as a player, he had batted .234/.301/.377.
He then became an umpire. He worked the 2024 Premier 12.
