Guogang Yang has played for China in numerous international events. In the 1998 Baseball World Cup, he hit .313/.333/.688 as China's DH, leading the team in slugging. Playing first base in the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, he was 6 for 17 with a walk. He hit .211/.333/.316 in the 2002 World University Championship, again at DH for China. He also played for China in the 2002 Asian Games.
Yang played in the 2003 Asian Championship and 2005 Asian Championship. He was China's third baseman in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, hitting .241/.371/.345 but making 5 errors in 7 games and fielding .750. In 2005, he hit .323 for the Tianjin Lions to finish 8th in the China Baseball League in average. He was China's starting third sacker in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, making two errors in three games while going 3 for 9 with 2 walks and a double; only Yi Feng and Wei Wang had a better OPS among China's starting position players.
