Biographical Information[edit]

Gregg Pleeter pitched for three seasons in the minor leagues.

Pleeter was told by many coaches in junior high and high school that he had no career in pro baseball and should focus on basketball. The tall right-hander stuck with both sports until he decided to put his attention solely on baseball in college. He was 5-6 with a 4.24 ERA as a junior at Fairleigh Dickinson, with 86 strikeouts but 54 walks in 76 1/3 IP. He led the Northeast Conference in whiffs, walks and wild pitches (13). He fell 11 strikeouts shy of the school record. His senior year, he fell to 2-6, 5.88 with 59 walks in 72 innings. He led the NEC in walks by 25 and was 4th with 67 K. The St. Louis Cardinals, behind scout Joe Rigoli, opted to take him in the 45th round of the 2004 amateur draft.

Gregg made his pro debut with the Johnson City Cardinals and went 4-0 with a 4.60 ERA in 18 games, striking out 43 and allowing 29 hits and 19 walks in 43 innings. A highlight came on July 12 against the Greeneville Astros when he was part of a five-man no-hitter, relieving starter Tim Lemon in the 6th. He worked one frame then was succeeded by Jessen Grant, Timothy Gross and Brian Parish to wrap it up. He was let go by St. Louis and split 2005 between the independent Windy City Thunderbolts (0-3, 8.41 in 3 G) and North Shore Spirit (2-1, 6.00, 27 BB in 33 IP over 14 G). He allowed 3 hits in one scoreless inning for the 2006 Spirit. He finished his professional career with a 6-4, 5.83 record in 37 games, allowing 86 hits and 61 walks in 97 1/3 IP while striking out 90.
