Biographical Information

Greg David was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round of the 1985 amateur draft and played five seasons in their organization. The 25th overall pick of the draft, he went in between Dave Masters and Randy Nosek. He was the last high school position player to go in the first round that season.

David hit .234/.305/.383 as a rookie for the Medicine Hat Blue Jays, with 18 passed balls in 36 games behind the plate. Baseball America rated him as the #3 prospect in the Pioneer League behind Mike Devereaux and Walt McConnell. He batted .241/.347/.369 for the 1986 Florence Blue Jays with a whopping 41 passed balls. He drew 70 walks for the '87 Medicine Hat Blue Jays, had 20 passed balls and produced at a .218/.353/.361 rate. He led his club in both walks and home runs (11).

Greg hit .225/.320/.364 with 15 home runs for the 1988 Myrtle Beach Blue Jays; moving to third base, he fielded only .877 with 37 errors. He tied teammate Greg Vella for fifth in the South Atlantic League in homers but also led SAL third basemen in errors. Back with Myrtle Beach in '89, the former prospect struggled at the plate (.221/.333/.337) and made 16 errors at yet another new position, first base.

Moving to the San Diego Padres chain, David split 1990 between the Waterloo Diamonds (0 for 1, BB) and the Wichita Wranglers (.296/.356/.470, his best season). He fielded .886 at third base for Wichita, making 30 errors. He was 8th in the Texas League in average, between Wiley Lee and Kevin Belcher, and was second in 3B errors, one behind Chris Donnels.

In a utility role for Wichita in '91, the former first-rounder fell to .255/.342/.350. He spent his last season with the Kansas City Royals' Memphis Chicks affiliate, with a weak batting line of .220/.332/.289. Playing primarily catcher once again, he only had nine passed balls.

Overall, David had hit .240/.339/.369 in 796 minor league games, with 67 home runs and 384 walks. He had fielded .878 at third base, had 100 passed balls in 326 games at catcher and fielded .984 at first base. He had never advanced beyond AA.
