Biographical Information[edit]
While playing in the Southern Association in 1959, Gordy Coleman hit .353 with 30 homers and 110 RBI to win the league's Triple Crown. This earned him a brief look with the Cleveland Indians, hitting .533 (8-for-15). With Frank "Trader" Lane king of the Cleveland castle, this meant it was time for Gordy to be traded, to the Cincinnati Reds as part of a package to land an aging Johnny Temple. Gordy blossomed into a fine first baseman, batting .287/.341/.504 with 26 home runs and 87 RBI in 1961 as the club marched to the National League pennant. He followed with a strong .277/.331/.485, 28 home runs and 86 RBI in 1962, then tapered off as Deron Johnson and Tony Perez began to push him for playing time. Finishing his career in 1967, Gordy was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 1972, later serving as a broadcaster for the club before his untimely passing in 1994. Gordy was a cousin of Larry Littleton.
