Biographical Information[edit]
Glen Kuiper was an Oakland Athletics television broadcaster from 2004 to 2023. His brother, Duane Kuiper, is a former major league player and is currently a San Francisco Giants broadcaster. His second cousin is Dick Bosman.
In 1982, Kuiper was taken in the 10th round of the January draft by the Cincinnati Reds, but opted for college. He played two years in the minor leagues, debuting with the 1985 Spokane Indians and hit .319/~.418/.362 in 18 games at second base, backing up Joey Cora. Had he qualified, he would have ranked 7th in the Northwest League in batting average, one spot behind Cora. Glen's brother wasn't the sole part of the team's baseball family ties - Spokane had been purchased that year by Ken Brett, George Brett, Bobby Brett and John Brett.
With the 1986 Erie Cardinals, Glen batted .225/~.320/.233. In 129 at-bats, his only extra-base hit was a double. He again shared second base with a future major leaguer - this time, it was Luis Alicea.
He was suspended from the A's broadcast booth on May 6, 2023, one day after using a racial slur on air while describing his visit to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, MO in a pre-game segment. The network described the incident as unacceptable and, following an internal review, he was officially fired on May 22nd.
