Biographical Information[edit]

German Melendez played for a decade in the minors (peaking at AA) then became a coach.

Melendez hit .232 for Ciudad Alianza in 1999, then .308 with 16 steals for the 2000 DSL Astros and .279 with the same club in 2001. In 2002, he came to the USA and batted .291/.362/.355 as the primary catcher for the Martinsville Astros. He had 340 putouts, leading Appalachian League backstops. In '03, he hit .218/.294/.251 with the Lexington Legends. He turned six double plays, leading South Atlantic League catchers.

German returned to Lexington in 2004 and improved to .227/.325/.290. He again led SAL catchers, but this time in errors (11). In '05, he was moved to the pitching mound. He split time between the Tri-City ValleyCats (7-0, 2 Sv, 2.86, 32 K in 28 1/3 IP) and Lexington (3 R in 1 2/3 IP). During 2006, he was with Lexington (2-0, 7 Sv, 1.32, .150 opponent average, 44 K in 34 IP) and the Salem Avalanche (1-1, 6 Sv, 3.15).

Melendez pitched 44 times for the Corpus Christi Hooks in 2007, going 6-5 with 4 saves and a 4.18 ERA. In the winter, he played for the Navegantes del Magallanes. He wrapped up his playing career with the 2008 Hooks (1-0, Sv, 3.63 in 10 G).

Following his playing career, Melendez joined the Tampa Bay Rays organization and has coached or managed in their minor league system since then.

Melendez was scheduled to coach the Hudson Valley Renegades in 2020 before COVID-19 caused the cancellation of the minor league season.
