Biographical Information[edit]
The son of George Sisler and brother of Dave Sisler and Dick Sisler, George Sisler Jr. had a long career as a baseball executive, serving especially of note in the International League.
George Jr. was born in St. Louis, MO in 1917, when his father was playing ball for the 1917 St. Louis Browns. However, on August 1, George Jr.'s date of birth, the Browns were in New York City where their game that day was rained out. George Sr. had played on July 31 and would play again on August 2 in New York City.
He never played in the major leagues (unlike the other three), spending four years of limited playing time in the low minors. He split 1939 between the Beaver Falls Bees and Youngstown Browns. From 1940-1942, he played for the Albany Cardinals. He went 13 for 55 with two doubles in 1941 and 8 for 21 with a triple in 1942.
Sisler was named business manager for the Albany Cardinals in 1940 [1]. He was the General Manager of the Rochester Red Wings for 11 years, during which time he was named Minor League Executive of the Year by The Sporting News in 1962.
From 1965 through 1976 he was president of the International League.
He stepped down in 1977 to become the general manager of the Columbus Clippers. As the Clippers GM, he was named Minor League Executive of the Year again in 1977 and 1979, becoming the second three-time winner of that award (following Jim Paul) and the only man to accomplish that feat with the higher-classifications (AA and AAA). He retired from the Columbus GM job after the 1989 campaign. In 2007 he was elected to the International League Hall of Fame.
