Gastonia Tigers

[edit]

In 1986 the former Gastonia Jets of the South Atlantic League were re-named the Gastonia Tigers after the formerly independent team from Gastonia, NC joined the Detroit Tigers farm system. Managed by Johnny Lipon the team went 55-77, 8th in the 10-team SAL. The staff included #1 draft pick Randy Nosek (4-5, 6.02), Kevin Ritz (1-2, 4.21) and closer Mike York (2-2, 9 Sv, 3.44). The big name, though, was a holdover from the independent team, right-hander Ken Hill (9-5, 2.79), who allowed just 95 hits in 123 innings. Hill finished sixth in the league in ERA. The next season the club switched affiliations and became the Gastonia Rangers.
