Biographical Information[edit]
Franklin German failed to retire a batter in his major league debut for the Boston Red Sox against the Kansas City Royals on September 17, 2022 at Fenway Park. He came in to start the 6th inning with Boston trailing, 4-0, and walked the first batter he faced, Edward Olivares; Michael Massey followed with a single, then Hunter Dozier drew another walk to load the bases after which Nate Eaton singled in a run. Eduard Bazardo replaced Frank on the mound, but he allowed all three inherited runners to eventually score, giving German an infinite ERA with four earned runs allowed. He ended up pitching in 5 games that season, for a total of 4 innings, with no decisions and an ERA of 18.00, the result of surrendering 8 runs, all earned, during these four innings, including the four in his debut. Things went a lot better in the minor leagues as he was named Boston's Minor League Pitcher of the Year after going 5-2, 2.72 in 43 games between the AA Portland Sea Dogs and AAA Worcester Red Sox. He saved 7 games and struck out 64 batters in 49 2/3 innings.
He was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the 4th round of the 2018 amateur draft but was sent to the Red Sox in a rare transaction between the two bitter rivals, on January 25, 2021, which also sent Adam Ottavino to Boston in return for future considerations, in what was in effect a deal to dump Ottavino's remaining salary. On February 3, 2023, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox for minor leaguer Theo Denlinger, a few days after having been designated for assignment in order to make room on Boston's 40-man roster.
He is not to be confused with 2000s pitcher Franklyn German.
