Biographical Information[edit]
Fernando González has been on the Panamanian national team.
Born in Panama, he moved to the US in 2018. [1] He hit .254/.275/.343 as a college freshman, throwing out 45% of those who tried to steal and handling 330 chances error-free to set a school record for fielding at catcher. [2] That summer, he was 1 for 2 with a run for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He hit .258/.368/.424 as a sophomore then posted a .197/.296/.239 line for the 2022 Red Sox. He won All-Defense honors as both a junior (hitting .234/.369/.431) and senior (.292/.364/.532, 53 RBI in 48 G). [3]
With Panama in the 2024 Premier 12, he was their starting catcher rather than their two players with minor league experience, Robert Mullen and Mario Sanjur. He grounded out against the Dutch national team's Shairon Martis his first time up. His first hit was a double off Martis. For the event, he batted .222/.263/.278 and handled 43 chances error-free, throwing out 3 of 7 would-be base-stealers. He led the event in runners thrown out stealing, one more than Carlos Perez, Willie MacIver, Andrys Pérez and Robbie Perkins. [4]
