Biographical Information[edit]

Erik Lommerde pitched in the Hoofdklasse and for the Dutch national team.

Lommerde pitched for the Netherlands when they won Silver in the 1989 European Championship and 1991 European Championship. [1] In between, he was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in four games in the 1990 Baseball World Cup; he tied Nico Adam for second on the team in appearances, one behind Jan van Gorkum. He hot their win over Italy and Paolo Ceccaroli. [2] In the 1994 Baseball World Cup, he was hit hard (12 H, 3 BB, 8 R in 3 IP); Patrick Klerx was the only other Dutch hurler with an ERA over 4.40. He was rocked by Japan, losing to Tetsuo Kawajiri. [3]

His final major event for the Netherlands was the 1995 European Championship. He started their opener, dominating newcomer Ukraine with five hitless innings (he walked Iouri Tourchenko and hit Vadim Skripets) before Rob Cordemans took over and blew the no-hitter, while maintaining the shutout. He started Game 3 of the finals against Italy and got the 7-4 win over Rolando Cretis, working seven innings and allowing five hits, a walk and three runs while fanning five before Klerx closed it out to clinch the title for the Dutch. He tied Eelco Jansen, Dante Carbini, Michael Wäller and Guillaume Coste for 2nd in wins (one behind Frank Mathys), was 8th in ERA (2.25, between Cedric Fournier and Samuel Meurant), was second in opponent average (.119, behind Michael DeGelmini) and had the lowest WHIP (5.25, .34 ahead of Coste).
