Erie Blackbirds

The Erie Blackbirds joined the Eastern League in 1893. The Erie, PA club was managed by Charlie Morton and won the EL pennant that year with a 63-41 record, one game ahead of the Springfield Ponies. Erie had three .300 hitters in SS Frank Scheibeck (.304, 39 SB, 121 R), OF Dan Lally (.333, .504 SLG) and OF John Shearon (.332, 31 SB, .505 SLG, a league-leading 17 triples). Dad Clarke (31-14, 2.62) led the league in wins and complete games (41) while George Nicol (13-9, 1.80) posted the lowest ERA.

In 1894, Erie slipped to third at 57-49. Morton's club saw fine years from 1B Jim Field (.344), 2B Parson Nicholson (.333, 115 R, an EL-leading 71 steals), Shearon (.355, 108 R, 23 SB, .569 SLG, second in the league with 19 triples) and Lally (.331, .456 SLG). Joe Herndon, John Healy and Gus McGinnis were the pitchers. The Blackbirds did not return in 1895.
