Biographical Information

In a very short career, George Nicol made a big impression both as a pitcher and as a hitter. He pitched a no-hitter in his first game and a one-hitter in his second, although circumstances helped him a lot. As a hitter, his lifetime average was .362. His no-hitter came in the talented-depleted American Association at the tail end of the 1890 season. Pitching for the St. Louis Browns on September 23rd, he defeated the Philadelphia Athletics, who were playing out the season with fill-ins after getting rid of all of their regulars in order to save money. The game was shortened to seven innings and St. Louis prevailed easily, 21-2. He walked 9 batters and his teammates committed 4 errors behind him. His next start came a week later against the same weak opponent, and this time he was given credit for a 7-3 win in a game that was called after five innings.

SABR has a biography of Nicol which says he was playing for Los Angeles in 1893 when the league's finances became shaky. He went to Erie for the rest of the season.
