Biographical Information

Eric Stamets was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 6th round of the 2012 amateur draft. He began his professional career that year with the Cedar Rapids Kernels of the Midwest League, hitting .274/.323/.347 in 62 games as the team's primary shortstop after he joined them. In 2013, he played 126 games for the Inland Empire 66ers, hitting .281 with 28 doubles and scoring 80 runs. He also stole 16 bases in 20 attempts. In 2013, he moved up to the Arkansas Travelers of the AA Texas League, where he hit only .235/.293/.314 in 106 games. He went back to Arkansas at the start of 2015 and was hitting .248 after 62 games when he was traded to the Cleveland Indians on July 28th in return for OF David Murphy.

He started the 2019 season with the Indians, starting at shortstop in place of an injured Francisco Lindor. While his fielding was strong, he had a rough welcome at the plate, getting just 1 hit in his first 22 at-bats. He returned to the minors in mid-April and finished the year at AAA. After the coronavirus pandemic year of 2020, Stamets played for two additional years in the Colorado Rockies and Toronto Blue Jays organizations. He did not return to the major leagues in either season.

Stamets moved into coaching as development coach for the Asheville Tourists in 2023-2024.
