Biographical Information[edit]

Eric Páez has pitched in Spain and Italy and has been on the Spanish national team.

He debuted in the 2012 Division de Honor, allowing one unearned run in 1 1/3 IP for CB Barcelona, which won the title. [1] Turning 17 the next summer, he had a save and a 2.38 ERA in five outings. [2] He allowed six runs in five innings in the 2013 European Cup, losing to Neptunus and Nick Veltkamp. [3] During 2014, he joined the rotation and posted a 8-4, 3.66 record. He was 9th in the league in IP (91) and tied for 5th in wins despite leading with 21 wild pitches. [4]

The right-hander was 4-2 with a 4.20 ERA in 2015. [5] The next year, he was 5-0 with two saves and a 4.89 ERA. He tied Iván Granados, Óscar Jiménez and Jesús Golindano for 5th in saves and led with 17 appearances (one ahead of Jorge Balboa and Kerson Trinidad). [6] In 2017, he was 1-1 with five saves and a 2.27 ERA in 19 appearances. He was among the leaders in ERA (5th, between Yorfrank López and Zael Honora), opponent average (.231, 8th, between Lowuin Sacramento and Yulman Ribeiro), saves (first, two ahead of former major leaguer Romulo Sánchez) and games pitched (first, 5 more than anyone else). [7] In the 2017 U23 European Championship, he dominated Poland and Croatia, going 2-0 with four hits and one unearned run in 12 IP. Only Robin Roevens worked more innings without allowing an earned run. Sascha Koch and Antonio Horvatić were the only hurlers to allow a lower average and he tied for the most wins. [8]

Páez moved to CB Sant Boi for 2018, going 9-4 with a save and a 4.84 ERA. He was 8th in ERA, 4th in IP (96 2/3), 9th in K (69), tied Cesar Gonzalez for 4th in wins and tied for the most appearances (18). [9] In '19, he was with CB Viladecans but struggled at 2-6 with a save and 7.33 ERA, tying for 4th in losses. [10] He did not pitch in 2020 and had another rough time in 2021 (2-2, 6.00 for Viladecans). [11] He rebounded to 4-4 with a 3.96 ERA in 2022, tying for 8th in strikeouts (63). [12]

He was 9-5 with a 3.20 ERA and 114 K in 107 IP in 2023 and also pitched briefly in both Italy (1-2, 2.79 ERA for Sala Baganza) and in the French minors (1-1, 1.69). [13] He was among Spain's leaders in wins (tied Julio Torrealba and Jose Diaz for 3rd), games pitched (16, tied for 4th), complete games (4, 3rd), innings (2nd, one off the pace) and strikeouts (2nd, 3 behind Roberto Ros). He won Pitcher of the Year. [14] He was on Spain's team that won the 2023 European Championship but did not get into a game. [15]
