Elmer Smith hit the first grand slam home run in the history of the World Series. He hit it off Burleigh Grimes of the Brooklyn Robins in the 1st inning of Game 5 of the 1920 World Series.

Smith played ten years in the majors plus many years in the minors. A peak in the majors was in 1920 when he went .316/.391/.520 for the Cleveland Indians, who won the 1920 World Series.

He led the Northern League in home runs in 1913 and led the Eastern Association in batting average in 1914.

At age 40, he missed winning a batting title by one point in 1932. All told, he had 224 minor league home runs.
