Biographical Information

Ed Saavedra played nine seasons in the minors, peaking at AAA.

Saavedra debuted in 1977 as a 17-year-old with the Batavia Trojans, hitting .272/.389/.340 with 30 walks and 30 runs in 51 games. His .986 fielding percentage ranked second among New York-Penn League outfielders. He split 1978 between Batavia (.321/.403/.460) and the Waterloo Indians (5 for 29, 2B, 3B, BB). He was 7th in the NYPL in average and scored 50 runs in 62 games. He was one of four All-Star outfielders picked alongside Frank Wren, Ted Wilborn and Andre Wood.

Ed hit .276/.353/.367 for Waterloo in 1979. In 1980, he was with the Redwood Pioneers (.277/.409/.393 in 58 G, 19 steals in 23 tries) and Chattanooga Lookouts (.207/.271/.264 in 62 G). Demoted back to Waterloo in 1981, he had his big year, producing at a .336/.416/.530 rate with 87 runs, 19 homers, 85 RBI and 36 steals in 43 attempts. He easily led the Midwest League in average, 25 points ahead of Jim Eisenreich, and he also tied Eisenreich for the hit lead (152). He joined Henry Cotto and Eisenreich as the All-Star outfielders and also won MVP honors.

The Panamanian was better in his second try with Chattanooga, hitting .279/.326/.388 in 1982 with 28 steals (caught 6 times). He led the Southern League with 12 sacrifice flies and his .996 fielding percentage led SL flyhawks. He also had 14 assists, second to only Mike Fuentes. In '83, Saavedra played for the Buffalo Bisons (.255/.360/.394) and Charleston Charlies (0 for 4). He spent 1984 with the Bisons (.284/.350/.425, no errors) and Maine Guides (3 for 10). He ended his career with two teams in the 1985 Mexican League, going 4 for 22 with a double, triple, home run and two walks.
