Biographical Information

Ed Morgan was a good hitter in a relatively brief major league career. He played for the Cleveland Indians from 1928 to 1933 and for the Boston Red Sox in 1934. His lifetime average was .313.

Morgan attended Tulane University from 1923 to 1926. In 1928, he appeared in 76 games, hitting .313. Except in 1929, he was primarily a first baseman during his career. When Morgan came up, Lew Fonseca was the Indians' starting first baseman, and would continue to be through 1929.

Moved into the outfield for 1929, Morgan hit .318 with 10 triples in only 94 games. In 1930, back at first base, Morgan blossomed, hitting .349 and leading the team with 136 RBI. It was the heart of the lively ball era, and the team as a whole hit .304. Morgan's .349 average was only third among the Indians regulars. Nevertheless, he was 9th in the American League in batting average, 5th in slugging average, 3rd in doubles, 6th in home runs and 6th in RBI.

In 1931, he pushed his average up a bit to .351, although his power dropped off. However, the team batting average fell off to .296, so Morgan's was more valuable. He was 3rd in the league, behind Al Simmons and Babe Ruth, and just ahead of Mickey Cochrane and Lou Gehrig.

In 1932, his average dropped off to .293, as the team hit .285. His .402 slugging percentage was below the team average of .413.

In 1933, Morgan, now 29 years old, appeared in 39 games, hitting .264. Harley Boss took over the first base job.

In 1934, with the Boston Red Sox, Morgan again played as the regular first baseman, hitting .267 on a team that hit .264. His slugging percentage, however, was 30 points below the team slugging percentage. Dale Alexander had played first for the Red Sox in the preceding year, and Babe Dahlgren would get the job in 1935.

Morgan played for the New Orleans Pelicans in 1927, 1933, 1935 and 1936.
