Biographical Information

He could run like heck, he was a good outfielder, his offense... he wasn’t gonna set no records with his bat or anything, but he was a great extra man to have. Ed Armbrister was a reserve outfielder from the Bahamas who spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds. He is best remembered for his controversial bunt in Game 3 of the 1975 World Series. Armbrister was called on to sacrifice in the 10th inning after the Boston Red Sox had rallied to tie the game. His bunt bounced high in front of the plate, and Ed became entangled with catcher Carlton Fisk. Fisk threw wildly into center field as lead runner César Gerónimo took third and later scored, providing the margin of victory in a 6-5 Reds win. Despite Boston's vehement protests, interference was not called by home plate umpire Larry Barnett.

Ed's brother, Jonathan Armbrister, pitched briefly in the minor leagues.
