Biographical Information[edit]
Relief pitcher Drew Hayes began playing in the Cincinnati Reds minor league system in 2010.
He was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 26th round of the 2006 amateur draft out of high school, a few picks ahead of Khris Davis, but did not sign a contract. He was then taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 22nd round of the 2009 amateur draft, but again, he did not sign. The pitcher finally came to terms with a team after being drafted by Cincinnati in the 11th round of the 2010 amateur draft, out of Vanderbilt University.
Hayes pitched for the Billings Mustangs in 2010, making 14 appearances and going 1-3 with a 2.42 ERA. The next year, he was 2-2 with 22 saves and a 1.35 ERA in 51 games for the Dayton Dragons, striking out 89 batters and allowing only 29 hits in 60 innings. MLB.com named him the Class A Relief Pitcher of the Year and he was a MiLB.com Organization All-Star. He slipped a little with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in 2012, going 2-3 with a 3.41 ERA in 56 games and the wheels came off in 2013, as he posted a 5.43 ERA and allowed 73 hits in 63 innings with the Blue Wahoos. He spent 2014 with Pensacola, pitching 52 times with a record of 5-3, 4.06 and 4 saves. In 2015, he made only 4 appearances at Pensacola before getting his first shot at AAA with the Louisville Bats. Combined, he went 4-4, 2.69 in 47 games and recorded 3 saves. He pitched 63 2/3 innings and struck out 60.
Drew was back with Louisville at the start of the 2016 season but after 3 appearances he got the call to Cincinnati on April 20th. he made his big league debut the next day, facing the Chicago Cubs. It was a memorable game, as the Reds were already trailing 9-0 when he came into the game in the 7th inning; after retiring David Ross on a ground ball, he loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walk, then coughed up a grand slam to Kris Bryant to make the score 13-0. He managed to retire the Cubs in order in the 8th, but the Reds not only ended up 16-0 losers that day, they were no-hit by Jake Arrieta in the second-most lopsided no-hitter in major league history.
In June 2018 Hayes joined Trinity Christian Academy to teach English and serve as an assistant coach with the baseball and football teams. The baseball team was led by Jeremy Maddox, the same coach who led McKenzie High School and Hayes to a state championship in 2006. Maddox and Hayes led the TCA team to the state tournament in 2019. It is unclear how long Hayes stayed at TCA.
The Toronto Blue Jays hired Hayes in 2021 as a development coach for the Dunedin Blue Jays. Either before the season started or early in the season, Hayes moved into the pitching coach position. He returned to Dunedin in 2022 as the pitching coach, then moved to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2023 and Buffalo Bisons in 2024.
