Biographical Information[edit]
"I guess I had a college or high school approach to it all... When I first got signed, there wasn't any negotiating to do. What was I going to do, demand $900 a month instead of $850? When I got to Colorado Springs, a couple of guys on the team who had been in the majors -- Clint Barmes and Frank Menechino -- asked me who my agent was. I said I didn't have one. They said 'Doug, you aren't in college anymore, you need an agent.' So I ended up hiring Clint's guy." - Doug Bernier, discussing his unlikely journey to the bigs in John Feinstein's 2014 book Where Nobody Knows Your Name
An undrafted free agent out of Oral Roberts University, Doug Bernier was expected to be nothing more than minor league depth before determinedly grinding his way up each step of the Colorado Rockies organization, making his major league debut as an emergency shortstop due to an injury to Troy Tulowitzki in June 2008. Hitless in four at bats before going down, he kicked around several organizations (Colorado, the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates) before his big league return on July 21, 2013, with the Minnesota Twins. He saw action in each of the next three big league seasons in the Twin Cities, logging a personal best 33 games in 2013 and rapping his first big league hit, an RBI double off Joe Blanton of the Los Angeles Angels, on July 22nd that year.
Doug finished his career with two seasons in the Texas Rangers organization. On August 9, 2016, playing for the Round Rock Express, he spoiled Jharel Cotton's bid to throw only the fourth perfect game in the history of the Pacific Coast League by tripling with two outs in the 9th inning.
