Biographical Information[edit]
Don Werner of the Cincinnati Reds caught the only no-hitter of Hall of Famer Tom Seaver's career on June 16, 1978.
Since retiring as a player, he has been a minor league manager and coach.
Werner was a player/coach for the Oklahoma City 89ers in 1987-1988. He coached in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as the hitting coach for the Buffalo Bisons in 1993-1994 and for the Carolina Mudcats in 1995. He was in the San Diego Padres chain for seven seasons, principally as a manager. In 1997-1998 he also worked as the Padres minor league catching coordinator.
He joined the Baltimore Orioles organization as the Delmarva Shorebirds field coach in 2003-2004. Werner was the skipper of the Bowie Baysox in 2005-2006. After the 2006 season he was named minor league catching instructor for the Orioles through the 2013 season when he was promoted to minor league catching coordinator. He stayed in this role through 2019 when the Orioles dismissed him in the midst of a significant player development makeover.
Werner enjoyed one brief coaching stint in the major leagues as an interim bullpen coach with the Orioles from June 24th to August 4th, 2011.
