Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Dillon Tate was selected by the Texas Rangers with the fourth overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft out of the University of California, Santa Barbara and was signed by scout Todd Guggiana. He was the first pitcher selected after shortstops were taken with the first three picks. He was a graduate of Major League Baseball's Urban Youth Academy in Compton, CA after being undrafted while coming out of high school. His experience at the Academy helped him to obtain a college scholarship.
In college, Tate was used both as a starter and a reliever in different years, but as a senior, he went 8-5, 2.26 in 14 starts.
Within days of being drafted, Tate signed with the Rangers for $4.2 million, and he soon made his pro debut with the Spokane Indians. He was moved up to the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League before the end of the season, ending up with a an ERA of 1.00 in 6 games - all starts but representing only 9 innings of work as the Rangers did not want to overuse him after a busy college season. In 2016, he was 3-3, 5.12 in his first 17 appearances for Hickory when on August 1st, he was one of three young players traded to the New York Yankees in return for veteran OF Carlos Beltran. The other two prospects were Nick Green and Erik Swanson. He finished the 2016 season with the Charleston RiverDogs, going 1-0, 3.12 in 7 games. In 2017, he made 13 starts split between the Class A Tampa Yankees and AA Trenton Thunder, with a combined record of 7-2, 2.81. He started the 2018 season at Trenton, where he was 5-2, 3.38 after 15 starts on July 24th, when he was the most promising of three prospects sent to the Baltimore Orioles to acquire reliever Zach Britton.
A year after being acquired by the Birds, he made his major league debut, on July 29, 2019, pitching 2 innings in relief and giving up 3 runs against the San Diego Padres.
