Biographical Information

Dick Smith was in 21 major league games with theWashington Senators in 1969, a team managed by Ted Williams. The team finished 86-76, and Dick played left field, competing for playing time with Frank Howard, who hit 48 home runs that year.

Dick was born in Lincolnton, NC and attended two colleges in North Carolina. He started in the minors in 1964, and except for part of 1970, spent his entire pro career with the Senators organization. Dick spent three years in A ball, hitting at least .291 each year. When he moved up to AA ball with the York White Roses, he dropped to .266 with 0 home runs in 56 games. The next year he struggled in a year that was split between AA and AAA ball, hitting .217 overall with 7 home runs. He returned to AAA with the Buffalo Bisons in 1969, hitting .325 with 9 home runs in 84 games, and came to the majors in August of that year.

In his last minor league year, 1970, he played 20 games in AAA for the Senators organization, but was mostly in the Montreal Expos organization. Between the two teams, at age 25, he hit .252 with 11 home runs in 102 games.

Overall, Dick went 3-for-28 in the majors with four walks, and hit .284 with 54 home runs, 24 triples and 35 stolen bases during seven years in the minors.

This Dick Smith is Richard Kelly Smith, from North Carolina. He should not be confused with Richard Harrison "Dick" Smith from Pennsylvania or Richard Arthur "Dick" Smith from Oregon.
