Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Dick Smith played 70 games in the majors over five years.

After graduation from Westover High School, Smith served in the army in World War II and attended Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. He began his pro career in 1949 with the Greenville Pirates, hitting .315 in 71 games. He hit .330 for the Charleston Rebels in 1951 and reached the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates that September. He made his debut on September 14th, going 1-for-4 and driving in a run against the Brooklyn Dodgers and ended the year with a .174 average in a dozen games in the majors. He split the next four years between Pittsburgh and the minor leagues. He later played in the Pacific Coast League from 1954 through 1960.

After his playing days, Smith received his masters degree from Penn State University and was employed by the university for 25 years.

Smith was the first of three major leaguers named "Dick Smith".
