Biographical Information[edit]
Derek Law turned pro in 2011 and made his major league debut five years later.
Law's father Joe Law reached AAA in the minors and helped teach Derek how pitch. Derek went 8-0 as a high school junior and was the only junior named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All-Area team in 2008. He disappointed scouts in 2009 by going 3-2 with a 1.70 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 39 innings, also hitting .428. He fell to the 28th round of the 2009 amateur draft before he was taken by the Texas Rangers, the second player picked that year from the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League following Gus Benusa. He had a commitment to Miami Dade College as well, which he wound up honoring. After going 8-5 with a 2.35 ERA and 121 K in 92 innings (while walking only 16), he moved up to the 9th round of the 2011 amateur draft, this time picked by the San Francisco Giants.
Law made his pro debut with the AZL Giants on July 13th with a hitless, walkless inning against the AZL Royals. He reached the majors with the Giants a little after the start of the 2016 season. He did very well in his rookie year, with 61 appearances, a 4-2 record, 1 save and a 2.13 ERA. He appeared 3 times in the Division Series against the Chicago Cubs, giving up a run in 2 1/3 innings. His playing time declined over the next two seasons, just as his ERA shot up. In 2017, he went 4-1, 5.06 in 41 games, with 4 saves, then in 2018 was limited to 7 games, going 1-0, 7.43. No longer in the Giants' longer-term plans, on April 2, 2019, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays alongside IF Alen Hanson and P Juan De Paula in return for CF Kevin Pillar.
Law throws a curveball, slider and fastball (which has hit as high as 93 on the radar gun).
