Biographical Information[edit]

Dean Jacobs made his South African national team debut in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers; he was the first person from his hometown to play for the team. He made his debut against Australia, relieving Callan Pearce with a 3-0 deficit in the top of the 5th. He allowed two hits, two walks but only one run in two innings, striking out Stefan Welch. Robert Lewis-Walker relieved him in the 7th. In his other outing, he replaced Pearce in the bottom of the 8th with a 6-5 deficit against Australia in the finale. He walked Trent D'Antonio and Brad Harman had a bunt hit then Allan de San Miguel bunted into a two-run error by Jonathan Phillips and Jacobs retired James Beresford. Russell Olivier relieved and Australia would tack on another four runs before the inning was over.

He was the first South African hurler to give up a run in the 2019 Africa Cup Baseball Championship, surrendering three (one earned) to Burkina Faso in the 1st inning of game 2 but South Africa still swept the event. He finished 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA. He was 0-1 with a 19.29 ERA in the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier, losing to the Netherlands and Mike Bolsenbroek. He was on South Africa's announced roster for the 2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers before that event was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he was the only one of South Africa's hurlers not to allow a run (among the 8 pitchers they sent to the hill). Against Germany, he replaced Donavon Hendricks in the bottom of the 8th with a 11-4 deficit. He walked former major leaguer Aaron Altherr, retired Daniel Aldrich, gave up an Eric Brenk single and got Lucas Dunn to ground into a double play.
