Biographical Information[edit]

Russell Olivier made his South African national team debut in the 2009 Baseball World Cup. He started in center field in the opener but went 0 for 2 with a double-play grounder and one error in two chances against Spain and Jonathan Phillips moved to CF to the last two games. By the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, Olivier had moved to the mound. In his lone outing, he relieved Dean Jacobs in the bottom of the 8th of the finale against host Australia with one on, one out and a 8-5 deficit. He allowed a sacrifice fly to Logan Wade then gave up a hit to Mitch Dening and walked David Sutherland. Kieran Cree relieved, but both wound up scoring, giving Olivier a 54.00 ERA for the event, highest on the team (Garth Cahill was next at 13.50).
