Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Daysbel Hernández was signed by the Atlanta Braves as an international amateur free agent on September 13, 2017, after defecting from his native Cuba, where he had pitched for Pinar del Rio in 2014-15 and 2015-16, when he was still a teenager.
His time in the Braves' system wasn't always smooth. used solely as a reliever, he started off with the Florida Fire Frogs of the Florida State League in 2018, but was demoted to the Rome Braves of the South Atlantic League after putting up an ERA of 6.59 in 8 games. he pitched better at the lower level and followed that with an excellent season with the Fire Frogs in 2019, going 5-1, 1.71 with 7 saves in 35 outings, but then had to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He then played winter ball for the Caneros de Los Mochis in the Mexican Pacific League in 2020-21. In 2021, he made it up all the way to AAA while splitting the season between the AA Mississippi Braves and AAA Gwinnett Stripers. On July 10th, pitching with Mississippi in AA, he combined with Bryce Elder on a 6-0 no-hitter over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Between the two stops, he went 3-2, 3.83 in 36 games, with 3 saves. The following winter, back with Los Mochis, he pitched the huge total of 25 games, going 0-1, 2.67 with 10 saves. However, he paid the price for the huge effort as he had to undergo Tommy John surgery in the spring and missed the entire 2022 season.
In 2023, he made his way up through three levels of the Braves' system, starting in Rome and also stopping at Mississippi and Gwinnett. he was dominant at all three levels, going 3-0, 2.05 in 20 games and striking out 32 batters in 22 innings. He was called up to Atlanta to make his debut on July 23rd, facing the Milwaukee Brewers. In his inning of work in relief of Elder, he recorded all three outs via strikeout and received credit for the team's 4-2 win.
