Biographical Information[edit]
David Carpenter was picked by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the ninth round of the 2009 draft, signed by scout Arnold Brathwaite and debuted with the Orem Owlz, going 2-2 with eight saves, a 2.36 ERA, .202 opponent average and 42 whiffs in 34 1/3 innings. Assigned to the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2010, he went 2-4 with 8 saves, a 2.58 ERA and over a strikeout per inning in 27 games. In 2011, he was 0-1 but with an 0.91 ERA and 11 saves in 25 games for the Inland Empire 66ers, then was promoted to the Arkansas Travelers of the AA Texas League, where he went 1-0 without giving up a single earned run in 19 appearances, totaling 18 2/3 innings. He pitched only 2 games for the AAA Salt Lake Bees, recording 3 scoreless innings, before getting the call to the big leagues.
In his major league debut with the Angels on April 13, 2012, he pitched a scoreless inning in relief in a 5-0 loss to the New York Yankees. He was perfectly adequate in 28 games, with a 1-2 record and 4.76 ERA in 39 2/3 innings. And that was really about it for David. He made two appearances, one in each of the next two seasons, then finished his big league career with four National League appearances in 2015.
He is not to be confused with another pitcher named David Carpenter, who made his major league debut in 2011. Oddly enough, the two were teammates on the 2015 Atlanta Braves.
