Biographical Information

Outfielder Dariel Álvarez played in the Cuban National Series from 2006 to 2012. With the Ganaderos de Camaguey in 2010-2011, he batted .363/.404/.613 with 20 home runs and 81 RBI. He was third in hits (behind Dainer Moreira and Yordanis Samón, missed the top 10 in homers by one, was 5th in total bases (211, between Reutilio Hurtado and Edilse Silva), tied Frederich Cepeda and Yulieski Gourriel for 6th in RBI and ranked 8th in average (between Serguei Pérez and Yoandry Urgellés). He was not named the All-Star left fielder, which went to Cepeda. He fell to .272/.343/.392 in 2011-2012 and did not make the league leaders in anything.

He defected, signed with the Baltimore Orioles and began his minor league career in 2013, hitting .342/.373/.570 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 22 games between the GCL Orioles, Frederick Keys and Bowie Baysox. In 2014, he hit .306/.330/.472 with 15 home runs and 87 RBI in 135 games between the Baysox and Triple-A Norfolk Tides. In his first taste of Triple A, he hit .301/.328/.439 in 44 games. He was an Eastern League Mid- and Post-Season All-Star selection, a MiLB.com Organization All-Star selection and a Futures Game selection.

Entering 2015, Baseball America named him the #5 prospect in the Orioles system. He spent the season with Norfolk, playing 130 games during which he hit .275 with 24 doubles and 16 homers, scored 61 runs and drove in 72. He was called up to Baltimore on August 28th to make his big league debut as the team's starting right fielder against the Texas Rangers. Batting 8th, he went 0 for 3 while striking out twice against Cole Hamels. He went 2 for 3 the next day, his first hit a double off Martin Perez. He would see time in 14 games with the O's over 2015 and 2016, batting .215 with a home run. An attempt to convert to pitching in 2017 resulted in Tommy John surgery and he became a free agent after the 2018 season, re-surfacing in the Mexican League.
