Biographical Information[edit]

Danyells García has played for the Ecuadorian national team.

He was born in Cuba, where he played under the name Dánger García; he reported that his name was routinely misprinted, including in his passport. [1] His father was a world champion boxer and his mother a competitive gymnast. [2] He played briefly for Camagüey in the Cuban Serie Nacional, going 2 for 20 with a walk and two runs in 2009-2010, fielding .935 at 2B, where he backed up Yosvani García. He roomed with Dayron Varona. [3] Following the season, he defected to Ecuador. [4]

Obtaining citizenship in Ecuador after several years, he played for their softball team in 2016, while aiming to be the first Cuban to play for their baseball team. [5] The Ecuador national team did not compete in any major tournaments from 2014-2021, but he was still active by the 2022 South American Championship, when he became the first Cuban to suit up for Ecuador's baseball squad. He was the team's second-oldest player, after former Tigers signee Samuel Felman. He started at first base in their opener against Argentina, hitting 5th. He drew a walk from Guido Monis his first time up but was stranded. The next plate appearance, he bunted Gustavo Landin and Felman over but both were stranded and Ecuador was blanked in a mercy rule loss. The next day, they bounced back to beat host Peru. He did his share, drawing a second-inning walk from Jorge Sivirichi, advancing on a grounder from Orlando Leon and a single by Ledy Alvarez and scoring on a throwing error by Johan Verastegui. In the 6th, down 3-2, he laid down a bunt single against Jonathan Farías to load the bases. After Landin was retired at home on a force, he and Felman scored on a hit by Brian Letamendi, Felman getting the tying run and García the winner. [6]
