Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Cy Sneed was picked in the 3rd round of the 2014 amateur draft by the Milwaukee Brewers out of Dallas Baptist University (the scout was K.J. Hendricks). Three years earlier, in 2011, he was a 35th round selection by the Texas Rangers out of a high school in Idaho after being Gatorade Player of the Year for Idaho, but did not sign. His father Robert Sneed was drafted in 1986 and his brother Zeb Sneed pitched in the minors.
He made his professional debut in 2014 with the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League, going 0-2, 5.92 in 11 games. He played for two different teams in 2015, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League and the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League, going a combined 6-11 with a 2.58 ERA in 26 games, including 24 starts. He pitched 139 1/3 innings and had an excellent K/W ratio of 122/28. On November 19th, he was traded to the Houston Astros in return for major league infielder Jonathan Villar.
His actual first name is Cy, unlike most of the players who are remembered by that first name. A few were formally named Cyril or Cyrus, but most were nicknamed Cy after the great Cy Young, who himself was given the nickname as the short form of Cyclone. The most recent major leaguer remembered with the first name Cy is Cy Acosta, who pitched in the 1970s.
