Biographical Information[edit]
Craig Kornfeld reached as high as AA then became a scout.
Kornfeld was on the team that won the 1970 Little League World Series, the only US team to win a Little League World Series from 1967-1974. He was 0 for 1 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch as the catcher and #2 hitter for Wayne. The Minnesota Twins took Craig in the second round of the January 1977 draft. He did not sign, then went in the same round of the January 1978 draft to the Chicago Cubs, one pick before Jesse Orosco. He split that season between the GCL Cubs (.298/.377/.368, 21 SB, 4 CS in 51 G) and Pompano Beach Cubs (2 for 14, 2B, 2 BB). He was 4th in the Gulf Coast League in steals and average (between Jeff Doyle and Albert Hall) while placing 10th in OBP. He led GCL shortstops in putouts (69), assists (114) and fielding percentage (.943).
With the 1979 Quad Cities Cubs, Kornfeld hit .259/.335/.327 and stole 41 bases in 52 tries, while scoring 78 runs. He tied Luis Bravo for 5th in the Midwest League in steals and tied for 8th in runs. Moving to second base, he led MWL players there with 29 errors. Returning to the Quad Cities the next year, he put up a batting line of .286/.345/.399 along with 74 runs, 6 triples and 55 steals in 65 attempts. He improved his fielding percentage at 2B to .962. He was 5th in the league in steals (behind Kurt Kingsolver and Von Hayes), tied Larry Doby Jr. for 6th in triples and was 8th in average. He lost out All-Star honors at 2B to Jim Christensen.
In 1981, Kornfeld wrapped up his playing career with the Midland Cubs, batting .248/.296/.329 and fielding .966 in 53 games. His speed vanished due to an ankle injury, as he was just 2-for-10 in steal attempts.
Overall, Craig had produced at a .270/.337/.356 in 351 minor league games, with 119 steals in 152 tries and 214 runs.
He later scouted for the New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals, signing Joe Beimel, Matt Grace, Mike Johnston, Tommy Milone, Dane Sardinha and Preston Wilson.
