Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Connor Phillips was drafted twice, the first time coming out of high school in the 35th round of the 2019 amateur draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, and the second after an abbreviated season at McLennan Community College by the Seattle Mariners in Competitive Balance Round B in the 2nd round of the 2020 amateur draft. He was already considered an excellent prospect in 2019 but unlikely to sign, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed his plans about college and he let it be known that he was now ready to turn pro, explaining his high ranking the following year. He signed for a bonus of just over $1 million.

Like almost all 2020 draftees, Connor had to wait until the following spring to begin his professional career, which he did with the Modesto Nuts of the Low-A West. He pitched very well, going 7-2 in 16 starts and earned a late-year promotion to the Everett AquaSox of the High-A West where he made 1 more start. Altogether, his stat line was 7-4, 4.62 in 17 games - all starts - with 111 strikeouts in 76 innings, 64 hits allowed and 39 walks. This good initial performance resulted in his being named his team's #15 prospect as spring training started in 2022. However, on March 29th, he was sent to the Cincinnati Reds as the player to be named later to complete a major trade that had taken place on March 14th. In that deal, veteran sluggers Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker had been traded to Seattle in return for prospects: OF Jake Fraley, Ps Justin Dunn and Brandon Williamson, and now him. He split the season between the Class A Dayton Dragons and AA Chattanooga Lookouts, going 5-8, 3.78 in 24 starts and 109 233 innings.

His major league debut on September 5, 2023 came against his former team, the Mariners. He started the game at Great American Ball Park and gave up 5 runs on 6 hits in 4 2/3 innings, including a pair of home runs by Teoscar Hernández and Julio Rodríguez, but was not involved in the decision as Cincinnati came back to win the game, 7-6. He had begun the season at Chattanooga before a promotion to the AAA Louisville Bats and had gone 4-5, 3.86 in 25 games between the two teams.
